America’s Got Talent (AGT) is back with its 20th season! The popular competition reality show, which premiered in June 2006, continues to showcase a variety of incredible talent.
Judges Simon Cowell, Sofía Vergara, Howie Mandel, and Mel B help decide who moves on in the competition. However, before contestants even step in front of the judges, they must follow a set of strict rules. Here are 11 important rules all AGT contestants must follow.
1. Eligibility Requirements
Just like other reality competition shows, AGT has strict eligibility rules for contestants. Here’s what you need to know:
- Contestants must be 18 or older (unless they have a parent or guardian with them).
- They must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or have a valid visa.
- Contestants must disclose any connections to the show before auditioning.
- A background check is required.
- Contestants cannot be running for public office while auditioning.
2. Audition Process
Every contestant goes through a quick virtual open call before meeting the judges. For season 20, participants could choose between an in-person audition in Pasadena, submitting an audition video, or signing up for a virtual open call. No matter how they audition, all acts get only 90 seconds to impress the producers.
3. Singers Must Be Prepared to Perform Without Instruments
Although singers can bring instruments, they should also be ready to perform without them. Most singers audition acapella to make sure their vocals stand out without any backing tracks. Having extra songs ready is recommended, just in case the producers ask for more.
4. Props and Animals Need Approval
For acts with props (like fire or swords) or animals, approval from producers is required. Safety is a top priority, so contestants must get the green light before performing with any potentially risky elements.
5. Costumes: Early Guidance and Wardrobe Team
Before the live shows, producers provide guidance on what to wear for auditions. Once contestants reach the live rounds, they work with a wardrobe team to pick outfits that best fit their performance.
6. Singing Contestants Don’t Always Choose Their Songs
Singing contestants often work with producers to pick songs that suit their vocal abilities while also following legal licensing rules. This ensures that the songs are ready for TV.
7. Perform Your Full Act Unless You Get X’d Out
In the early auditions, if all four judges press their red X buttons, the contestant must stop performing. If only one or two judges hit the X, contestants are required to finish their act. Judges can also ask for additional material during the audition.
8. Contestants Don’t Get Paid for Appearing
Although contestants do not receive payment for their time on the show, they are provided with living accommodations, food, travel expenses, and medical services while filming.
9. Disqualification Can Happen at Any Time
AGT producers have the right to disqualify contestants at any time, for any reason, or no reason at all. This rule is common in many reality competition show contracts.
10. Voting Problems? Producers Step In
While the judges initially decide who moves on in the competition, public voting decides the finalists and winner. If there are issues with the voting system, producers can step in and determine who advances.
11. Public Criticism is Part of the Show
Contestants should be prepared for public ridicule. The audience can cheer or boo both contestants and judges. Contestants must accept that their portrayal on the show may not always be flattering and could be embarrassing at times.
