A Tennessee mother is facing child abuse and neglect charges after she allegedly left her 2-year-old daughter alone at their apartment for more than nine hours while she visited a man.
Shelby Bradshaw, 33, was arrested after police discovered the toddler unattended in her crib, prompting an immediate investigation.
The Disturbing Discovery
The incident occurred in Greenbrier, Tennessee, a city just over 20 miles north of Nashville. Police were called to the apartment complex after a maintenance crew found the child alone during a routine check. Upon arriving at the scene, Greenbrier Police Officer Curt Allen found the toddler in her crib, visibly scared and confused.
“I walked up to the bed and the little girl stood up in the crib and put her arms up like she wanted me to pick her up,” Officer Allen said. “I held her until a family member arrived about 25 to 30 minutes later.” He described the situation as upsetting, noting that the child seemed scared and unsure of what was happening.
The Mother’s Explanation
When Bradshaw returned to the apartment more than nine hours after leaving her daughter alone, she was confronted by police. Body camera footage showed the mother appearing confused and unaware of why officers were at her apartment.
She allegedly told authorities that she had driven about 25 minutes to visit a man and that she expected to return before her daughter woke up.
Bradshaw reportedly stated that she is a full-time mother and “needed a break.” She explained that she had tried to find someone to watch her daughter the night before but was unsuccessful. According to Detective Joseph Chelini, Bradshaw’s explanation did not excuse leaving the child alone for such an extended period.
Arrest and Investigation
Shelby Bradshaw was arrested and charged with child abuse and neglect. She is currently being held in jail on a $25,000 bond. The child is now staying with relatives, and the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services is investigating the situation.
This case has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of the child, highlighting the importance of responsible parenting and ensuring that children are never left alone in potentially dangerous situations.
Shelby Bradshaw’s decision to leave her young daughter alone for over nine hours has resulted in criminal charges and an ongoing investigation. While the toddler is now safe with relatives, this case serves as a reminder of the critical need for parents to prioritize their children’s safety and well-being at all times.
