In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Jeff Hiller, known for his role as Joel in Somebody Somewhere, shares insights into his off-screen relationship with co-star Bridget Everett, who plays Sam in the hit HBO series.
The two actors, who portray best friends on the show, reveal that they enjoy their own version of “tini time,” a time for enjoying martinis, just like their characters.
The Real-Life ‘Tini Time with Bridget Everett
While Joel and Sam are often seen having fun together over martinis in Somebody Somewhere, Hiller and Everett enjoy their own social gatherings off-camera. “It’s usually lots of people, and we have these two mutual friends who are a couple, so it’s sometimes the four or five [of us] with my husband,” Hiller explains.
Though their “tini time” might not be a regular one-on-one affair, the actor jokes about how he’s had to limit his martinis due to the consequences of a hangover.
“I have to not have ‘tinis anymore because Mama gets hungover,” he laughs, adding that sometimes by the time he leaves a party, he’s already feeling the effects. “I’m not quite the drinker that Joel is,” he quips, referencing his character’s more spirited approach to drinking.
A Somebody Somewhere Reunion?
As for Somebody Somewhere, which is set to conclude its run in December 2024, Hiller shared that he and Everett have often talked about the possibility of a reunion. “We’ve dreamed about it,” he says. “There was nobody that was like, ‘Oh, okay, onto the next.’
It was so special for all of us, and we really do love each other.” Hiller believes that if the opportunity came, the entire cast would be on board without hesitation.
However, he notes that a reunion would depend on several factors, including money, networks, scripts, and writing. “I think everybody would be on board in a heartbeat if something happened,” he adds.
Jeff Hiller’s New Book: Actress of a Certain Age
In addition to his work on Somebody Somewhere, Hiller has recently released a collection of autobiographical essays titled Actress of a Certain Age. The book delves into Hiller’s life journey, from his experiences as a bullied gay child in Texas to his career as a social worker before making his big break as an actor.
Hiller reflects on the challenges and triumphs that led to his role in Somebody Somewhere at the age of 44, a milestone that he calls one of the most significant moments of his life.
Actress of a Certain Age is available now, and Somebody Somewhere can be streamed on Max.
Jeff Hiller’s candid conversation with PEOPLE gives fans a glimpse into the real-life bond he shares with Bridget Everett, both on and off screen. The duo’s fun “tini time” moments add a personal touch to their iconic friendship on Somebody Somewhere.
With Hiller’s new book out and a potential reunion for the beloved series on the horizon, it’s clear that his journey continues to captivate audiences and friends alike.
