Central Mississippi is experiencing dangerously high temperatures today, with heat index values reaching as high as 110°F. Areas like Jackson, Yazoo City, and Brookhaven are facing severe heat stress, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Heat Advisory for much of the region.
Residents are urged to take extra precautions to stay safe in the intense heat.
Heat Advisory Details
The Heat Advisory covers central and southwestern Mississippi, including cities like Jackson, Vicksburg, Yazoo City, and Natchez. Temperatures will peak in the mid-90s, but with high humidity, it will feel much hotter, pushing the heat index well into the triple digits. The most dangerous time for heat-related illness is from noon until 7 p.m., when conditions are at their worst.
In areas with an “Elevated (Level 2)” risk, prolonged outdoor activity could lead to heat exhaustion or even heat stroke. Even places in the “Limited (Level 1)” risk zone, such as Meridian and Columbus, will experience heat indices near 105°F.
Safety Tips for Residents
To stay safe during this extreme heat, residents should:
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day
- Avoid outdoor work or strenuous activities during the hottest hours (noon to 7 p.m.)
- Never leave children, pets, or elderly people in parked vehicles
- Seek shelter in air-conditioned spaces or cool public places
- Check on elderly neighbors to ensure they’re comfortable and safe
- Provide pets with shade and water to prevent overheating
Heat Advisory Duration and Outlook
This is Mississippi’s first widespread heat advisory of the season, and it will remain in effect through Friday evening. There may be additional heat alerts over the weekend as temperatures remain high. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and will issue further warnings if necessary.
