Harrisburg, PA – An intense heat wave is expected to impact central Pennsylvania starting Sunday, with “feels-like” temperatures climbing above 105°F and remaining dangerously high through Wednesday evening.
The National Weather Service in State College has issued an Extreme Heat Watch for more than 20 counties, including Dauphin, Cumberland, Franklin, York, Lancaster, and Centre.
Heat Wave Details
Health officials are particularly concerned about Monday and Tuesday, when both humidity and daytime highs will peak, creating ideal conditions for heat-related illnesses. Overnight temperatures will remain warm and muggy, offering little relief.
Cities such as State College, Harrisburg, York, and Lancaster could experience consecutive days of hazardous outdoor conditions.
Health and Safety Precautions
Local health authorities are urging residents to take precautions during the extreme heat:
- Stay indoors during peak heat hours.
- Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
- Check on elderly neighbors and others who may be more vulnerable to heat-related illnesses.
- Avoid outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.
Additionally, pet owners should be cautious not to leave animals outside without access to water or shade.
Potential Power Outages and Cooling Centers
Utilities are expected to face increased demand as air conditioning systems work overtime to keep up with the heat. Power outages are possible in some areas due to the strain on electrical grids.
If you don’t have air conditioning, it is recommended to seek out local cooling centers or shaded public buildings for relief.
Alert Duration and Updates
The Extreme Heat Watch is in effect through 8 p.m. Wednesday, but it could be upgraded to a warning if conditions worsen. Residents are advised to stay tuned to local weather updates and visit weather.gov/StateCollege for the latest information.
