Fort Wayne, IN – A dangerously hot stretch of weather is expected to hit northern Indiana and surrounding areas this weekend, with heat index values soaring as high as 106°F through Tuesday evening.

The National Weather Service in Northern Indiana has issued an Extreme Heat Watch for much of the region, including Fort Wayne, South Bend, Elkhart, and extending into northwest Ohio and southwest Michigan.

Heat Wave Details

The most intense heat is expected on Sunday and Monday, with high humidity levels and overnight lows in the mid-70s offering little relief.

Cities such as South Bend, Lima, and Hillsdale may experience four consecutive days of hazardous heat, which can be life-threatening for vulnerable populations, particularly the elderly, young children, and those without reliable cooling systems.

Health and Safety Precautions

Health officials are urging residents to take extra precautions during the heat wave:

  • Stay indoors during the peak afternoon heat, especially from noon to 6 p.m.
  • Use fans and air conditioning to keep cool. If you don’t have AC, consider visiting air-conditioned public spaces or cooling centers.
  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.
  • Check on neighbors, particularly the elderly, children, and those without access to cooling.
  • Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.

This heat wave is part of a trend of early-summer heat events not seen in the region since June 2012, with prolonged exposure to high temperatures even indoors posing a risk, especially in homes without adequate cooling.

Forecast and Alerts

The Extreme Heat Watch is in effect through 8 p.m. Tuesday, but it may be upgraded if conditions worsen. Residents are advised to stay tuned to local weather alerts for updates, as this heat event could potentially escalate.
