Mariah Carey is known for her larger-than-life persona, and her beliefs about time certainly live up to her unique reputation.
In a recent appearance on the U.K. radio station Capital FM on June 16, the 56-year-old superstar made it clear that she doesn’t adhere to the conventional rules about time—or even birthdays.
Mariah Carey’s Unconventional Belief About Time
When co-host Jordan North asked Carey, “Is it true you don’t acknowledge the passing of time?”, the singer casually responded, “That is true.” The question caught her co-hosts by surprise, with Sian Welby pressing her for clarification.
“What do you mean by that?” Welby asked, to which Carey simply replied, “I just don’t believe in it.”
Carey was then asked if her disbelief extended to time zones, but she clarified, “No, just time.” The conversation took a humorous turn when Welby inquired, “So no clocks? Just not into that?” Carey nonchalantly replied, “Yeah. No, just let it go.”
No Birthday, Just Anniversaries
The conversation moved to the topic of birthdays, a holiday many people hold dear. When asked if she celebrates her birthday, Carey responded with her signature flair: “I don’t have a birthday, no. Anniversaries, yes.”
Her response left the hosts baffled, with Chris Stark still trying to understand the logic, asking, “But if we were to meet up later, how would we know when?” North quipped, “It’s on Mariah’s time.” Carey quickly added, “Yeah, I would have someone call you and figure it out.”
Mariah’s Consistent Beliefs on Time and Aging
This isn’t the first time Carey has spoken out about her unconventional views on time and aging. Back in 2014, she famously told Out Magazine, “I’m eternally 12 years old,” when discussing her ageless persona.
She has also openly stated in the past that she doesn’t “count years” and prefers to celebrate anniversaries instead of birthdays, as she explained in an interview with Complex in 2016.
Carey even explained, “I was just dropped here. It was a fairyland experience,” when asked about the idea of having a birthday. In 2019, she reaffirmed her belief, saying that her “true fans” know she is “eternally 12.”
Teasing New Music
Despite her playful disregard for the concept of birthdays, Carey is still keeping fans excited about her career. In June 2025, she teased the upcoming release of her sixteenth studio album, which is set to drop later this year.
