Taylor Jenkins Reid, the best-selling author behind hits like Daisy Jones & the Six and Carrie Soto Is Back, has exciting news for her fans. During a recent appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Reid teased her upcoming project — a The Chicks-themed jukebox musical.
The show will center around the country group’s iconic song “Goodbye, Earl” and will incorporate their full discography into the story.
A New Kind of Musical: “Goodbye, Earl” and Beyond
Reid explained that the inspiration for the musical came to her while she was driving. “I was like, ‘This could be its own story, [and] what if you use the songs of The Chicks to tell that story?'” she recalled.
After coming up with the idea, Reid reached out to a friend who is a Broadway fanatic and works in the industry to pitch the concept.
Kelly Clarkson, who was equally excited about the project, praised Reid’s idea, saying, “The Chicks’ catalogue is insane,” acknowledging the group’s rich collection of hits. Reid confirmed that the musical would bring together a mix of The Chicks’ songs to tell a compelling narrative.
“Cowboy Take Me Away” Will Be Part of the Show
One of the big questions Clarkson had was whether Cowboy Take Me Away, another of The Chicks’ most popular songs, would make its way into the musical. Reid enthusiastically confirmed that it will be featured, reassuring Clarkson, “Let me assure you, it will.”
The inclusion of this beloved song means the musical will undoubtedly bring The Chicks’ powerful music and storytelling to the stage in an exciting new way.
Taylor Jenkins Reid’s Latest Work: Atmosphere
In addition to the big musical news, Reid also spoke about her most recent novel, Atmosphere, which she released on June 3. Set against the backdrop of the 1980s Space Shuttle program, the book marks a new chapter in Reid’s writing career. Despite her growing success in television and film adaptations of her work, Reid emphasized that writing books remains her true passion. “The majority of my time in my day is writing books that I’m proud of,” she explained.
Reid has had an impressive career with nine novels to her name, including Daisy Jones & the Six, which has been adapted into a hit TV show starring Riley Keough. Additionally, Carrie Soto Is Back is being executive-produced by Serena Williams for Netflix.
A New Chapter in Reid’s Creative Journey
Reid’s move into producing musicals is just the latest venture in her rapidly growing career. Her ability to blend music and storytelling, as seen in Daisy Jones & the Six, will undoubtedly shine in this new project.
As her fans eagerly await the release of the musical, Reid’s continued success in multiple creative fields proves that her storytelling abilities know no bounds.
