Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently sparked controversy by stating that drivers in his state would not face legal consequences if they hit protesters during demonstrations, as long as the driver fears for their safety.
During an appearance on The Rubin Report podcast, DeSantis explained that if a driver’s vehicle is surrounded by a mob of protesters, they have the right to “flee for your safety,” and any harm caused to the protesters in the process would be their responsibility.
DeSantis’ Stance on Safety and Self-Defense
“If you are driving on one of those streets and a mob comes and surrounds your vehicle and threatens you, you have a right to flee for your safety,” DeSantis said. “So if you drive off and hit one of these people, that’s their fault for impinging on you.”
The governor further emphasized that in Florida, people have the right to defend themselves in such situations.
His comments come amidst planned protests across the U.S., including several in Florida. These protests, referred to as “No Kings,” are mainly in opposition to the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Increased Tensions and Protests Across the U.S.
The protests have often become heated, with violent incidents occurring in some locations. For example, in Los Angeles, California, protests related to ICE arrests led to road closures and significant traffic jams, raising safety concerns for those caught in the midst of the demonstrations.
In some instances, drivers have used their vehicles to drive through crowds, resulting in injuries and even deaths.
DeSantis, known for his strong stance against certain protest movements, voiced opposition to disruptions caused by protests. He noted that protesters should not “commandeer” streets, arguing that such actions negatively affect people’s daily lives and quality of life.
“You have no right to commandeer streets,” he stated. “First of all, it’s just wrong; second of all, that has huge impacts on people’s quality of life.”
Law Enforcement and “Zero Tolerance” for Violent Protests
DeSantis’ comments echo his longstanding disapproval of violent protests, such as the ones that took place in 2020 following the death of George Floyd.
He has also expressed strong support for law enforcement, with one Florida sheriff recently declaring that protesters who threaten law enforcement would be “killed ‘graveyard dead.’”
These comments from DeSantis come as the “No Kings” protests escalate in various parts of the country, including Florida, which is a known hotspot for such demonstrations.
Governor DeSantis’ Leadership and Political Future
DeSantis is currently serving his second term as governor, which is set to end in early 2027 due to term limits.
While DeSantis has made clear his position on protests and the protection of drivers, his wife, Casey DeSantis, has been rumored to be considering a gubernatorial run, although no official decision has been made.
Meanwhile, DeSantis’ comments on protests and self-defense may influence his future political endeavors as he continues to be a prominent figure in Republican politics.
