A 48-year-old man from New York, Navdeep Singh, has been charged with conspiracy and criminal solicitation after authorities said he attempted to hire a hitman to murder his business associate as part of a violent and “deranged” plan.
Singh allegedly offered the hitman $100,000 and 10 acres of land in India to carry out the job, with extremely violent instructions about how the victim should be killed.
Details of the Alleged Plot
At a press conference on Monday, Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly shared shocking details of the case. Singh reportedly wanted his business associate kidnapped, murdered, and dismembered.
He also allegedly requested to receive pictures of the victim’s head and body once the murder was carried out. Singh’s violent and graphic demands raised serious concerns about the extent of the crime he was planning.
The two men had worked together in the construction industry for several years but their relationship soured after a dispute on a job site roughly two years ago. Singh and his colleague were involved in a multimillion-dollar civil lawsuit, which led to growing tensions between them.
In the months leading up to the plot, Singh allegedly decided that his business associate needed to be “removed permanently.”
The Scheme Begins to Unfold
The conspiracy allegedly began to take shape on May 29, when Singh made an initial offer of $100,000 and 10 acres of land in India to the hitman. Authorities said that Singh made a down payment of $7,000 to get the plan started.
The hitman met with Singh and a co-conspirator multiple times to iron out the details, with Singh reportedly instructing the hitman to “brutally torture, extort, and eventually kill” the victim.
Singh’s actions became even more suspicious when he reportedly purchased burner phones for the hitman to avoid detection by law enforcement. Singh also took pictures of the victim’s home and sent them to the hitman, even driving the hitman through the victim’s neighborhood on the day he was arrested.
The Hitman Turns to Authorities
The plot came to light when the would-be hitman came forward to alert police to the conspiracy. District Attorney Donnelly stated that thanks to the hitman’s decision to go to the authorities, a life was saved. Singh was arrested and is currently being held on a $1 million cash bond and a $2 million surety bond. He has also been ordered to surrender his passport.
Singh’s case highlights the extreme lengths to which some individuals may go when disputes escalate to dangerous levels. Singh will face court on Tuesday for his next hearing.
The Legal Outcome and Next Steps
Navdeep Singh is facing serious charges, including conspiracy and criminal solicitation, and his actions could lead to a lengthy prison sentence if convicted. His next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, where more details of the case may unfold.
Singh remains in custody, and the case is still under investigation as authorities continue to review the details of the alleged plot.
