Brandon Stokes, a popular radio DJ in Virginia Beach known as “Shaggy” on Z104’s morning show, found himself in trouble with the law on Wednesday morning. While police were investigating an officer-involved shooting, Stokes allegedly tried to drive through the crime scene area while under the influence of alcohol.
The Incident
At around 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, police were blocking off an area as they investigated the officer-involved shooting. Despite the warnings, Stokes allegedly attempted to drive through the area in his car to access his skating rink, which was located nearby. Officers stopped him, informing him multiple times that the area was restricted due to the ongoing investigation.
According to court documents, Stokes became confrontational with the officers. He reportedly became “belligerent,” shouting profanities and saying “You wanna bet?” when told he couldn’t drive through the scene. Officers also observed that Stokes’ speech was slurred, incoherent, and he smelled strongly of alcohol.
Drunk Driving and Arrest
When officers asked Stokes if he had been drinking, his response was unclear, but he was given a Breathalyzer test, which revealed a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.18 — more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 in Virginia. Stokes was arrested and charged with DUI (driving under the influence) and obstruction of justice. He was later booked into the county jail and released on bond.
Reaction and Return to Work
Despite the arrest, Stokes was back in the studio hosting his morning show on Thursday, as reported by local news outlets. His parent company, Audacy, was contacted for comment but did not immediately respond to inquiries.
Brandon Stokes’ run-in with the law is a stark reminder of the consequences of driving under the influence, especially when involved in an ongoing investigation. The popular DJ’s actions have caused a stir, and it remains to be seen how this will affect his career moving forward.
