Southern Arizona, including Phoenix, is facing a wave of extreme heat as temperatures soared to triple digits on Friday, with Phoenix reaching 104°F and many desert cities exceeding 102°F. The National Weather Service in Phoenix warns that the region could experience even hotter temperatures in the coming days, with some areas potentially hitting 110°F by Sunday.
Rising Temperatures Across the Region
On June 6, the temperatures were higher than usual for early summer, especially in lower desert cities like Gila Bend (102°F), Yuma (102°F), and Blythe (103°F). Other cities such as Mesa, El Centro, and Casa Grande also saw temperatures surpassing 100°F, continuing the trend of extreme heat for the start of June.
Deer Valley briefly dipped below 100°F to 99°F, but this is expected to be short-lived as temperatures are forecasted to climb further over the weekend.
Heat-Related Risks and Precautions
With excessive heat expected to build into Sunday and Monday, officials are preparing to issue heat advisories across Maricopa and Yuma counties. The extreme temperatures could put a strain on heat-sensitive infrastructure, such as power grids and roadways, especially during evening hours when heat persists.
Residents are urged to take steps to stay safe during the extreme heat. It’s important to avoid outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, usually between noon and 5 p.m. Staying hydrated is essential, and checking in on vulnerable neighbors, such as the elderly, is crucial.
Warnings and Preparedness
As temperatures approach 110°F this weekend, additional heat warnings may be issued. The National Weather Service will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as conditions change. It’s important for everyone in the region to stay informed and take precautions to limit outdoor exposure during this intense heat.
