Alabama Man Arrested After Shooting at Children’s Dance Recital Kills One, Injures Another

A tragic incident at a children’s dance recital in Alabama has led to the death of one man and the injury of another, following an argument that escalated into gun violence. Marcus Deangelo Sanders, 27, was arrested over the weekend and charged with murder after allegedly opening fire during the recital at the Saenger Theatre in Mobile, Alabama.

The Shooting at the Dance Recital

According to authorities, the shooting occurred on Sunday evening, around 6:30 p.m., when multiple 911 calls reported gunshots at the Saenger Theatre, where a children’s dance recital was taking place. Upon investigation, police discovered that Sanders had gotten into an argument with a known individual inside the building. During the dispute, Sanders allegedly shot Carl Williams III, a 27-year-old father, who was attending the recital to watch his daughter perform. A second victim was also injured in the process.

Authorities were able to identify Sanders as the shooter, but he fled the scene on foot. Later that evening, Sanders turned himself in to the police and was booked into the Metro Jail on charges of murder.

The Victims and the Community’s Shock

Carl Williams, the victim, was a devoted father of two daughters, ages 5 and 6, who were performing at the recital. His uncle, Keyon Williams, described him as a former standout athlete and a loving father who was always there for his daughters. “He was a fun-loving, easy-going guy who wanted to see others succeed,” said Keyon. Williams had attended the recital to support his daughters, and the tragic incident took place just feet away from where they were performing on stage.

The shooting has left the community in shock, especially given the location—an event meant for children and families. Mobile Police Chief William Jackson condemned the actions of the shooter, calling it “despicable” to bring a loaded gun into a children’s event. He emphasized that there is no dispute worth putting so many lives at risk and subjecting children to such trauma. “It’s sickening,” Jackson said in a statement.

Chaos and Trauma During the Recital

Michelle Murphy, a mother whose child was also performing at the recital, described the terrifying moments during the shooting. “You could tell a little bit of a commotion broke out then adults started standing up,” Murphy told local Fox affiliate WALA. “It went on for maybe a few seconds, and before my daughter’s father and his wife could even say ‘get down,’ they’re fighting. There went the first round, and then three followed.”

Despite the chaos, those involved in organizing the recital, Danze 101, were praised for handling the tragic situation with professionalism. Murphy and other witnesses highlighted how the staff managed to keep calm in such a distressing situation.

Sanders’ Arrest and Charges

After turning himself in to authorities, Marcus Sanders was taken into custody and charged with one count of murder in the death of Carl Williams. He is also facing charges for the injury of the second victim. The shooting has stunned both the local community and those who were present at the recital, many of whom were just there to enjoy a family-friendly event.

The shooting at the Saenger Theatre serves as a reminder of how quickly violence can erupt in seemingly peaceful settings. What was meant to be a joyful occasion for families was tragically marred by a senseless act of violence. As the investigation continues, many are left to reflect on the devastating impact of the shooting on the victims, their families, and the broader community. This tragic event serves as a reminder of the need to address conflicts peacefully and avoid putting innocent lives in harm’s way.
