Marcus Smart, the 2022 Defensive Player of the Year, has agreed to a contract buyout with the Washington Wizards and will join the Los Angeles Lakers on a two-year, $11 million deal, according to ESPN.
Smart, who struggled with injuries over the past two seasons and played just 54 games combined, is now set to bring his elite defensive skills to the Lakers.
Smart’s Role with the Lakers
At 31 years old, Smart’s defensive prowess will be a major asset to the Lakers, particularly as they look to enhance their defense and backcourt depth for a deep playoff run.
A three-time All-Defensive First Team selection, Smart’s ability to guard the perimeter and create turnovers has made him one of the league’s premier defenders. He averaged 1.6 steals per game over his career, showcasing his defensive instincts.
In a show of support, Luka Dončić, the Lakers’ star, personally reached out to Smart, making it clear that he wanted the two-way standout on the team.
A Fresh Start After Trade and Injuries
Smart played only 15 games for the Wizards after being traded from the Memphis Grizzlies in February, but his toughness and leadership are highly valued across the league. The move to the Lakers is seen as a chance for Smart to revitalize his career after struggling with injuries in the past couple of seasons.
Over 11 NBA seasons, Smart has averaged 10.6 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game, in addition to his defensive accolades. His versatility and intensity make him a perfect fit for a Lakers team looking to improve on both ends of the floor.
A Career with the Boston Celtics
Smart’s NBA journey began in 2014 when he was selected by the Boston Celtics with the No. 6 overall pick. He spent the first nine years of his career with the Celtics, becoming a key part of their defense and helping lead the team to the Eastern Conference Finals five times, as well as an NBA Finals appearance in 2022.
His departure from the Celtics marks the end of an era, but Smart’s legacy in Boston is cemented as one of the franchise’s most important defenders.
What’s Next for Marcus Smart?
The Lakers now look forward to adding Smart to their roster as they aim to strengthen their title contention in the coming seasons. The two-year deal provides both sides with flexibility, with Smart holding a player option in 2026 to enter free agency if he chooses.
