A violent altercation in a Redwood City apartment complex parking lot led to a police chase and the arrest of two men on Monday evening. The incident occurred at around 5:25 PM at an apartment complex located on the 1400 block of Ebener Street.
According to Redwood City Police, a group of four to five individuals was seen attacking a man, which raised concerns that the assault could involve a stabbing. Emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene after receiving reports of the altercation.
The Police Pursuit
Officers were alerted when they spotted a van matching the description provided by witnesses. What followed was a high-speed chase that headed eastbound on Woodside Road. Despite the police’s emergency lights and sirens, the driver refused to stop, leading them onto Hudson Street.
The pursuit ended when the van collided with a parked car, resulting in the immediate capture of the driver, 47-year-old Manuel Chavarria.
The front passenger, 36-year-old Gerardo Conrriquez, initially resisted arrest, which led to the deployment of a police K9. Conrriquez was eventually taken into custody. The police noted that there might have been a third suspect involved, though their whereabouts remain unknown.
The Victim and Investigation Details
While the intended victim of the assault was unharmed, he was reportedly uncooperative with the authorities. Witnesses and surveillance footage confirmed that Chavarria and Conrriquez were the perpetrators, armed and chasing the 20-year-old male victim during the altercation.
Charges and Legal Consequences
Following the chase, both suspects were booked into the San Mateo County Jail. Chavarria faces multiple charges, including assault with a deadly weapon, evading a police officer, conspiracy to commit a crime, resisting arrest, vehicle hit and run, and parole violation.
