Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi Under Heat Advisory: Heat Index Hits 109°F

Memphis, Tennessee – A dangerous heat wave is sweeping through Memphis and much of West Tennessee, with heat index values climbing as high as 109°F. The National Weather Service in Memphis has issued a heat advisory that remains in effect until 9 p.m. Thursday, affecting millions across the region.

The advisory spans several counties in Tennessee, including Shelby, Fayette, Dyer, Gibson, and Madison, as well as parts of North Mississippi, Southeast Missouri, and East Arkansas. Cities like Jackson, Dyersburg, Tupelo, and Jonesboro are also under the heat advisory, with temperatures and high humidity combining to create hazardous conditions throughout the day.

Residents in Memphis and Germantown are urged to take extra precautions, particularly during the afternoon and early evening hours when heat stress is at its peak. For those working outdoors, frequent breaks in shade or air conditioning are recommended.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) also advises staying hydrated and never leaving children or pets in vehicles.

As power usage spikes due to the extreme heat, utility crews are on standby, and cooling centers are opening in Jackson, Brownsville, and Union City. Local emergency managers are also urging residents to check on elderly neighbors and limit outdoor activities as much as possible.

This is the hottest day of July so far, with heat advisories expected to continue if the current weather pattern holds. Stay tuned for updates, as conditions could prompt additional warnings throughout the weekend.
