The New York Jets have secured their star wide receiver Garrett Wilson with a massive four-year, $130 million contract extension, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. This deal includes $90 million guaranteed, solidifying Wilson’s future with the Jets as one of the league’s top-paid receivers.
Wilson’s Career Achievements
Wilson has been a standout since being selected with the No. 10 pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Over his first three seasons, he has appeared in all 51 possible games and surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in each of those campaigns. In 2024, Wilson set career highs with 101 catches, 1,104 yards, and seven touchdowns.
The 2022 draft class standout is now one of only five players in NFL history to record at least 1,000 receiving yards and 80-plus receptions in each of their first three seasons. The exclusive group includes Ja’Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson, Odell Beckham Jr., and Michael Thomas.
Wilson’s 3,249 receiving yards over the past three seasons are the most among players from the 2022 draft class and rank 10th in the NFL during that span. At $32.5 million annually, Wilson now ranks as the fifth-highest paid receiver in the league, behind Chase, Jefferson, CeeDee Lamb, and DK Metcalf.
Wilson’s Success Despite Inconsistent Quarterback Play
Wilson has enjoyed remarkable success despite playing with multiple quarterbacks during his tenure with the Jets. He has had seven different quarterbacks throwing to him, including the veteran Aaron Rodgers during the 2024 season.
Rodgers’ time with the Jets was tumultuous, as he suffered a torn Achilles tendon just four snaps into the season. He played through a full 2024 season, but the Jets finished with a disappointing 5-12 record.
Rodgers’ tenure was short-lived, and after the season, new head coach Aaron Glenn made the decision to move on from the veteran quarterback, leading to Rodgers’ release.
Wilson’s New Quarterback: Justin Fields
In 2025, Wilson will be working with his eighth quarterback, as the Jets signed Justin Fields to a two-year, $40 million deal. Fields, drafted in the first round by the Chicago Bears in 2021, spent three seasons in Chicago before being traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers in March 2024.
He started six games for the Steelers, leading them to a 4-2 record, completing 65.8% of his passes for 3 touchdowns and one interception, along with five rushing touchdowns. However, Fields was eventually replaced by Russell Wilson after six games.
Despite not yet achieving All-Pro status, Fields offers significant upside, and the Jets hope his mobility and playmaking ability will provide Wilson with more stability than the inconsistent quarterback play Wilson has experienced over his first few seasons.
Wilson’s Role in the Jets’ Passing Game
Wilson’s 2024 season was his most productive to date. He led the Jets in receptions (101), targets (154), receiving yards (1,104), and was tied for the team lead in touchdowns (7) with Davante Adams. Going into 2025, Wilson will once again be the primary target in the Jets’ passing game after the team released Adams in March.
With a new quarterback under center and the Jets investing heavily in Wilson’s future, the wide receiver is poised to continue his impressive development and lead the team’s offense for the foreseeable future.
