In a shocking and deeply disturbing case of domestic violence, Daniel N. Pace, 43, was sentenced to the maximum 60 years in prison for setting his ex-girlfriend on fire after dousing her with vodka during a heated argument in 2022.
The sentencing, delivered by Tenth Circuit Judge Stephen A. Kouri, reflected the court’s strong condemnation of what it described as “exceptionally brutal or heinous behavior”.
The judge did not hold back during the hearing, calling Pace “incredibly evil” and telling the court, “We need a break from you.”
Attack Details: A Horror Unfolds
The incident occurred on August 19, 2022, at the Landmark Apartment Complex in Peoria, Illinois. According to the Peoria County State Attorney’s Office, Pace got into an argument with his ex-girlfriend, during which he grabbed a bottle of vodka, poured it over her, and lit her on fire—twice.
The attack left the woman with third-degree burns over 19% of her body and total burns covering 30%.
She was hospitalized and has endured multiple surgeries and ongoing treatment for both physical injuries and emotional trauma.
Victim’s Statement Reveals Ongoing Pain
The survivor wrote a powerful victim impact statement that was read aloud during the sentencing. She shared that she had lost two jobs due to her injuries and may never be able to work again. In addition to the physical pain, she described the emotional damage, financial hardship, and a lingering inability to trust others.
“It’s something I wouldn’t wish on anyone,” she said.
Her words helped paint a clear picture of the lasting harm caused by Pace’s cruelty.
Pattern of Abuse
Prosecutors revealed that Pace had a long history of domestic abuse, dating back to the early 2000s. They said he was responsible for monthly hospital visits during the course of this relationship, and he even locked the victim in the apartment for four days following the attack, denying her any medical help.
Despite these accusations, Pace tried to claim the injuries were accidental and part of a drug-fueled incident. He also interrupted the judge during sentencing, trying to justify his behavior by saying, “Most times, I was getting the bad end of the stick… These relationships, they were not good on both sides.”
His remarks were dismissed as lacking remorse and failed to sway the court.
Judge’s Strong Words
Judge Kouri, visibly disturbed by the case, said he had never before called a defendant “evil” in his courtroom, despite thinking it in past cases. His remarks highlighted the severity of the crime and Pace’s clear threat to public safety.
Under Illinois’ “Truth in Sentencing” law, Pace will be required to serve at least 85% of his sentence, meaning he could remain behind bars for over 51 years—likely for the rest of his life.
This case is a heartbreaking reminder of the devastating impact of domestic violence. Thanks to strong legal action, Daniel Pace has been removed from society, and a clear message has been sent: brutal acts of violence will face the harshest consequences.
While no sentence can undo the harm done, the survivor’s bravery and the court’s decisive action offer hope for justice and healing.
