A Comedy Dream Team
The series will be a half-hour sketch comedy that draws on the unique perspectives and talents of the three icons. The Obamas’ Higher Ground Productions will produce the show, marking their first project outside their Netflix deal, which was expanded in June 2024.
The project will be written by Larry David and his longtime collaborator Jeff Schaffer (known for Curb Your Enthusiasm), who will also serve as the series’ director. The show promises to feature noteworthy guest stars, adding to the excitement surrounding the release.
In a playful tone, the official logline for the project explains that the Obamas wanted to honor the 250th anniversary of the United States by celebrating the country’s unique history.
However, things took an unexpected turn when Larry David entered the picture: “President and Mrs. Obama wanted to honor America’s 250th anniversary and celebrate the unique history of our nation on this special occasion…But then Larry David called.”
Larry David’s Return to TV
This new series marks Larry David’s return to television after the conclusion of his long-running series Curb Your Enthusiasm in 2024, following its 12th and final season.
The comedian, known for his unique perspective on life and humor, will return to the small screen with a fresh take, this time alongside the Obamas and their Higher Ground Productions.
David himself commented humorously on his return to TV, explaining that after the end of Curb Your Enthusiasm, he tried to enjoy a quieter life. “Once Curb ended, I celebrated with a three-day foam party.
After a violent allergic reaction to the suds, I yearned to return to my simple life as a beekeeper, harvesting organic honey from the wildflowers in my meadow. Alas, one day my bees mysteriously vanished,” David quipped. “And so, it is with a heavy heart that I return to television, hoping to ease the loss of my beloved hive.”
The Obama’s Higher Ground Ventures into New Territory
This project marks a significant step for the Obamas’ Higher Ground Productions, as it’s their first production outside of their deal with Netflix, which has included a variety of successful projects.
The former president, Barack Obama, known for his thoughtful leadership, jokingly shared his thoughts on working with Larry David: “I’ve sat across the table from some of the world’s most difficult leaders and wrestled with some of our most intractable problems. Nothing has prepared me for working with Larry David.”
The new sketch comedy will aim to highlight key moments of American history with David’s signature humor, all while offering a lighthearted, satirical take on events that helped shape the nation.

Jeff Schaffer, who will also serve as an executive producer, provided a glimpse of what the show will offer: “The characters Larry is playing didn’t change history. In fact, they were largely ignored by history.
And that’s a good thing.” With David’s unique comedic approach, the series promises to deliver historical moments in a new and entertaining way.
