Johnny Depp Opens Up About Modi and His Return to Directing After 20 Years

Johnny Depp stepped out with a smile at the red carpet premiere of his new film Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness in London on Tuesday, July 8.

The 62-year-old actor and director looked stylish in his signature sunglasses and scarf, paired with an all-black tailored jacket and pants.

This marks Depp’s first time directing a film in over 20 years. His last directorial project was the 1997 film The Brave, which starred Marlon Brando. Modi is based on Dennis McIntyre’s play about the life of Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani, set in 1916 Paris.

Modi Features an All-Star Cast

In Modi, Riccardo Scamarcio, 44, takes on the role of the famous artist Amedeo Modigliani. Alongside him is Al Pacino, 85, who plays Maurice Gangnat, an art collector.

The movie also stars Stephen Graham and Antonia Desplat, and it takes viewers on a journey through the chaotic streets of Paris during World War I.

In the film, Pacino’s character challenges Modigliani, saying, “Just because you can paint on a canvas does not make you an artist. Doesn’t even make you a painter.” The film captures the struggles of Modigliani as he deals with the turmoil around him and his desire to leave the city.

Depp’s Passion for Modi

In January, Depp shared how directing Modi was a meaningful experience for him. He expressed his gratitude to the entire cast, crew, and producers for their hard work.

He also mentioned his longtime friend Al Pacino, saying, “To Al, who requested that I make this film — how could I refuse Pacino?” Depp added that Pacino’s contribution to the project was generous and appreciated.

Talking about working with Depp, Pacino described him as “very creative” and “wild,” saying, “It was fun to work with him. He would just say, ‘Here we are. A couple of toddlers.’ He’s wonderful.”

Depp Reflects on His Personal Connection to Modi

At the San Sebastián Film Festival in September, Depp made a reference to his past experiences, particularly his defamation trial with ex-wife Amber Heard, when talking about his connection to the character of Modigliani.

He explained that everyone has their own struggles, and sometimes life can feel like a “soap opera” that’s out of your control.

What’s Next for Johnny Depp?

Depp is also set to star in the upcoming movie Day Drinker, alongside Penélope Cruz and Madelyn Cline. But first, Modi will have its premiere at the San Sebastián and Rome Film Festivals before hitting theaters in 2025.
