Cape Girardeau, Mo. – Triple-digit heat is sweeping across the Missouri-Illinois border, with heat index values reaching 106°F through Friday evening, prompting an urgent advisory for millions of residents in the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, a Heat Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. CDT Friday for all of southeast Missouri, southern Illinois, southwest Indiana, and western Kentucky.
Cities such as Cape Girardeau, Carbondale, Paducah, and Evansville are experiencing the first prolonged stretch of heat and humidity this summer, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Intense Heat Across the Region
In southern Illinois, areas from Mount Vernon to Metropolis are seeing afternoon heat index values above 100°F. These extreme conditions also extend south through Sikeston, Poplar Bluff, and New Madrid, Missouri.
Emergency managers are advising residents to avoid outdoor labor during peak hours, drink plenty of water, and check on elderly neighbors and pets.
