Scorching heat continues to impact the Texas Panhandle this weekend, with highs reaching up to 99°F. On Saturday, areas like Palo Duro Canyon will come close to 100°F, while cities like Amarillo and Dumas will hover around 96°F.
Residents should brace for hot conditions through Sunday, with a slight drop in temperatures expected on Monday. Storm chances also increase early next week.
Current Heat and Wind Conditions
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, temperatures across the Panhandle will range from 92°F to 99°F today. Winds from the south will blow at 20 to 30 mph, which could make it feel even hotter. Cities like Guymon and Borger may peak at 98°F, while Amarillo and Dumas will experience highs around 96°F.
The intense heat will continue through Sunday, with only a slight dip in temperatures expected. However, changes are on the way early next week.
Monday’s Forecast: Cooler Temps and Storms
By Monday, temperatures are expected to drop slightly, ranging from 84°F to 95°F, particularly in the western Panhandle. As the cooler air arrives, the chance of thunderstorms increases. A 30% chance of storms will begin Sunday evening, rising to 50% by Monday, especially west of Amarillo.
These storms could bring gusty winds and heavy downpours, which may affect travel later in the day.
Safety Tips for Extreme Heat
Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours (typically between noon and 4 p.m.), and secure any loose outdoor objects due to the strong winds. Those in areas near open terrain and canyons should be alert for sudden gusts, which could create a fire hazard.
Looking Ahead: Midweek Outlook
Storms and cooler temperatures are expected to build in through the middle of next week, with additional advisories possibly issued as the situation develops.
