A South Dakota woman has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to the neglect and abuse of her 18-year-old son, which resulted in his tragic death. The case has drawn widespread attention due to the severe mistreatment the young man endured, as well as the neglect of a second child.
The Tragic Case of Donny Merrival
Naomia Prairie, 40, was sentenced on Monday after admitting to abusing and neglecting her disabled son, Donny Merrival, who had become a quadriplegic at the age of 14. Prairie’s actions led to her son’s malnourishment, poor hygiene, and general neglect. By the time of his death on March 3, 2024, Donny weighed just 80 lbs, a condition that a doctor described as similar to the appearance of a “Holocaust victim.”
According to prosecutors, Donny had previously thrived while in the care of the Department of Social Services. However, after he turned 18 and was returned to his mother, his health deteriorated rapidly. Prairie’s neglect left him in a motel room where he was not provided proper care, ultimately leading to his death. Following his death, Prairie fled the scene and did not immediately contact authorities.
The Abuse of Two Children
In addition to the neglect of her disabled son, Prairie exposed both of her children to illegal drugs while they were in her care. The surviving 7-year-old child was not only neglected but also taught to use methamphetamine by other adults. The child was never enrolled in school, and authorities expressed concern over the environment the children were subjected to. Since being removed from Prairie’s care, the 7-year-old has shown signs of progress, indicating the severe impact of the neglect.
Legal Consequences and Prairie’s Sentence
Naomia Prairie was convicted on multiple charges, including child abuse and abuse or neglect of a disabled adult. The judge sentenced her to 12 years in prison, recognizing the horrific conditions under which her children suffered. Prosecutors, including Chief Deputy State’s Attorney Gina Nelson, emphasized the cruelty and neglect Donny Merrival experienced during his final years, which ultimately led to his death.
The case highlights the tragic consequences of neglect and the need for stronger protective measures for vulnerable individuals, particularly those with disabilities. Authorities have been commended for their efforts to remove the surviving child from Prairie’s care, ensuring their safety and well-being moving forward.
The sentencing of Naomia Prairie serves as a reminder of the profound impact that neglect and abuse can have on vulnerable children. The tragic death of Donny Merrival underscores the importance of protecting individuals with disabilities, ensuring they receive the care and attention they need. While justice has been served with Prairie’s sentence, the emotional and psychological scars left on the surviving child remain a harsh reminder of the lasting consequences of neglect.
