A deputy in Volusia County, Florida, was arrested after she was caught riding her personal motorcycle with a fake license plate, authorities say. Deputy Erica Muzzy, 26, faces charges for possession of counterfeit license plates following the incident.
What Happened During the Incident?
The event took place around 9 p.m. on a Saturday in Deltona. Deputies were at a Wawa convenience store when they spotted a motorcyclist who had previously fled a traffic stop. That rider was with a group of motorcyclists, including Deputy Muzzy.
While deputies tried to arrest the fleeing motorcyclist, he called out to Muzzy, who then became argumentative with law enforcement. Deputies noticed Muzzy’s motorcycle had a fake license tag that read “CHASEM3.” Instead of allowing her motorcycle to be towed, she reportedly drove away with the fake tag flipped up.
Later, deputies stopped Muzzy on Interstate 4. Body camera footage showed her stepping off the bike and arguing with deputies. She said she was told she was “good to go” and was just trying to go home.
Deputy Admits to Using Fake Tags for Photos
After being taken into custody and receiving her Miranda warnings, Muzzy admitted she knew it was illegal to ride with fake tags. According to a probable cause affidavit, she said she often swaps her real license plate with a prop tag for photoshoots and simply forgot to put the real one back on her bike.
Following her arrest, the sheriff’s office discovered a social media account linked to Muzzy that showed her performing reckless stunt riding on public roads.
Resignation and Current Status
Erica Muzzy had been with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office since 2021. She resigned from the department instead of facing termination. She has since posted bond but has no lawyer listed in court records.
