Cable Barrier Prevents Catastrophic Crash After Dump Truck Tire Blowout on I-81

A potentially deadly crash was narrowly avoided on May 7, 2025, thanks to a cable barrier along I-81 in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Dash cam footage from a loaded ambulance shows the terrifying moment when a dump truck traveling northbound suffered a tire blowout, sending the vehicle veering toward the opposite lanes.

Fortunately, the median was equipped with a cable barrier system that stopped the truck from crossing over into southbound traffic—likely saving multiple lives, including those inside the ambulance.

Cumberland Goodwill EMS, the agency operating the ambulance, released the video and emphasized the importance of cable barriers on I-81.

“Our agency continues to be advocates for safety improvements on I-81, including cable median barriers. Today, a blown tire from a dump truck traveling northbound triggered a near crossover crash right into our loaded ambulance. Thankfully, it was in a cabled barrier area. There were no injuries and only minor damage to our ambulance,” stated Cumberland Goodwill EMS.

They also urged the public to contact legislators to support installing cable barriers along the entire stretch of I-81. History shows that median crossover crashes are often fatal when such safety measures are absent.
