Cat Near McDonald’s in Hagerstown Tests Positive for Rabies

Washington County health officials are warning the public after a cat tested positive for rabies near McDonald’s in Hagerstown, Maryland. The cat was found close to the McDonald’s located at 18411 Maugans Ave.

Authorities confirmed the cat was euthanized after testing positive for the deadly virus. As of today, no human exposure to the animal has been reported. However, the Washington County Health Department urges anyone who may have had contact with a cat near McDonald’s before May 1 to contact them immediately at 240-313-3210.

Rabies is a dangerous viral disease that attacks the nervous system. It is typically transmitted through the saliva of infected animals, and humans are most at risk if they are bitten or scratched by an infected animal.

Maryland health officials have stated that rabies has been well-established in the state since 1983. They urge the public to avoid contact with wild or unknown animals to minimize the risk of exposure.
