Pennsylvania Politician Refuses to Resign After DUI Crash

A county commissioner in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, is under fire after crashing a government vehicle while driving drunk—but he refuses to resign.

Commissioner George Hartwick admitted to drinking half a bottle of vodka before getting behind the wheel. The incident took place in a county-owned parking garage as he was heading to a commissioner’s meeting.

To make matters worse, the vehicle he crashed was not his own—it was a government-owned car. Police charged him with driving under the influence (DUI).

Despite the severity of the situation, Hartwick made it clear he has no plans to step down. “I’m not going anywhere,” he said. “I’m here to do the work I was elected to do and support our county employees.”

Not everyone agrees. Fellow commissioner Justin Douglas publicly called for Hartwick’s resignation, saying leaders must be held to higher standards, especially during critical times.

According to court documents, Hartwick consumed the equivalent of 8–9 standard drinks. For someone over 200 pounds, that could mean a blood alcohol level of about 0.15%—nearly twice the legal limit.

The situation has sparked serious debate in the county about leadership, responsibility, and accountability in public office.
