Homecoming Week: Show Off Your Green and White Spirit!

As the excitement of Homecoming week sweeps through James Buchanan High School, students are gearing up to show their school pride with a full lineup of spirit days, events, and, of course, the big dance.

From streamers and balloons to campaign signs and spirit wear, the energy is high and the countdown is on. Homecoming is more than just a dance—it’s a time-honored tradition that brings the entire school together.

“Homecoming is the first dance of the year—it’s a big deal, especially for freshmen who are experiencing their first high school dance,” said junior Gwenhvier Hunt, who has attended the event every year since ninth grade.

Key Dates:

  • Parade & Game: Friday, October 6
  • Dance: Saturday, October 7 from 7–10 p.m.
  • Location: JBHS Cafeteria

Friday’s festivities kick off with the Homecoming parade, featuring school groups showcasing their spirit as they make their way around the track. That evening, the JBHS football team takes on Frederick High School in what promises to be an exciting matchup. During the game, seniors from the football team, cheerleading squad, and Rocket Band will be honored as they walk across the field with their parents.

The Rocket Band will also perform their crowd-pleasing show, “Classical Madness,” one last time with their senior members.

Spirit Week: A Week of Fun and Tradition

Student Council (StuCo) leads the charge each year with creative Spirit Days that invite students to dress up and join in the fun:

  • Monday: Decade Day – Dress from your favorite decade
  • Tuesday: Twin Day – Match outfits with a friend
  • Wednesday: Red Carpet Day – Glam it up with formal wear and accessories
  • Thursday: Throwback Day – Revisit your childhood fashion
  • Friday: Blackout Day – Wear black to show spirit at the pep rally and game

“It’s really fun to dress up and get involved in the activities,” Hunt said of the spirit week traditions.

StuCo and the Homecoming Court candidates work hard to energize the student body, participating in all the events and rallying votes throughout the week.

The Homecoming pep rally is one of the week’s highlights, packed with performances, games, and surprises.

“The pep rally isn’t just thrown together at the last minute,” said StuCo Vice President Madison Shupp. “It takes time to plan the games, performers, and overall schedule.”

The pep rally features appearances from the Rocket Band, cheerleaders, and various sports teams—all hyping up the crowd for the big game and celebrating school pride.

The Grand Finale: A Night to Remember

On Saturday night, the JBHS cafeteria will transform into a glamorous Hollywood-inspired venue, complete with red carpet, gold and silver décor, and plenty of glitter. A local DJ will keep the dance floor alive with popular tracks, creating an unforgettable night for all students.

“I love getting dressed up and everything that comes with it. I’m excited to make memories that I’ll take with me to college,” said senior Katlin Shatzer, reflecting on her final Homecoming dance.

Whether it’s your first or last Homecoming, JBHS promises a week full of spirit, celebration, and lasting memories.
