Florida Mom Arrested After Leaving Son Alone in Filthy House with 7 Dogs While Vacationing in Las Vegas

In a deeply disturbing case from Florida, a woman has been arrested for leaving her teenage son alone in an extremely dirty house, filled with neglected dogs, while she went on a weeks-long vacation to Las Vegas.

Authorities say the child was left without proper food, care, or a clean environment, and was forced to rely on others to survive.

What Happened in Palatka, Florida?

Jessica Copeland, 37, from Palatka in Putnam County, Florida, is now facing multiple criminal charges, including:

One count of child neglect

Three counts of animal cruelty

Four counts of confinement of animals without food

The police were first called to her home on Songbird Road for a welfare check. An adult at the house told the officers that the teenage boy was doing fine. The child also spoke to deputies and said everything was okay. However, the truth came out in a second call.

Inside the House: A Shocking Scene

When officers returned with reports of animal neglect, they discovered a very different reality. The teenager admitted he had been completely alone since July 21, as his mother had gone to Las Vegas. He also said he was not given basic necessities to survive and had to depend on others to bring him food.

Inside the house, officers found seven dogs living in horrifying conditions. The dogs, identified as Onyx, Hera, Big Boy, Faye, Bella, Kitty, and Chase, were of various breeds including pit bulls, chihuahuas, a Lab/Mastiff mix, and a black mouth cur.

The home was covered in dog feces, some places as thick as four inches deep, and reeked of urine and waste. Bugs were flying around, and some dogs were extremely thin and unhealthy. The minor told police this wasn’t new, and that the house had been in this condition “for years.”

How Did the Authorities Respond?

After witnessing the filthy and dangerous living environment, officers arrested Jessica Copeland, who is now in Putnam County Jail with a $25,000 bond. A no-contact order has been issued, and she has been assigned a public defender.

The dogs were found without clean food or water, and some were severely malnourished. Authorities described the condition of the animals and home as one of the worst cases of neglect they had seen.
