In a deeply disturbing case from Texas, a 24-year-old man is now facing a murder charge after allegedly attacking his own mother with a hammer during a heated argument.
The victim, 61-year-old Lisa Babin, died nine days after the brutal assault, which took place at their home in Harris County on June 11, 2025.
What Happened That Day
Police say that Robert Babin, the son, initially attacked his mother after the two got into a verbal argument. The situation quickly turned violent, and Babin reportedly struck her multiple times in the head and side with a hammer, leaving her barely able to breathe.
Gaming Friend Alerted Police
What makes this case even more unusual is how it was reported. After the attack, Babin sent messages to a friend he was connected to through a gaming platform, admitting what he had done. In the messages, he wrote:
“I just assaulted my mother with a hammer… I got angry… I don’t want to end up on Death Row.”
The gaming friend, after seeing the messages almost two hours later, immediately called 911. Sadly, by the time help arrived, Lisa Babin had already suffered serious injuries and was unable to speak.
Police Response and Initial Lies
Deputies from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office rushed to the scene, where they found Lisa Babin in the backyard, barely breathing and in critical condition.
When questioned, Robert Babin told officers he had left his mother “napping and unhurt” and acted as if he didn’t know anything had happened.
However, his messages told a different story. According to court documents, Babin admitted in the online conversation that he was trying to destroy the weapon and hide the evidence before police arrived.
Victim Dies, Charges Upgraded
Lisa Babin sadly passed away nine days later, on June 20, 2025, due to the injuries she suffered during the attack. Following her death, the charge against Robert Babin was upgraded from aggravated assault to murder on July 29, according to Harris County court records.
What Authorities Say
Police believe the murder happened after a family argument turned violent. Harris County Sheriff’s Office Major Ben Katrib explained that the investigation showed signs that Babin tried to cover up the crime, but thanks to his gaming friend’s 911 call, officers were able to respond before it was too late.
“Luckily, his friend did the right thing and called 911,” Katrib said. “We were able to respond in time, even though the victim suffered greatly.”
This tragic incident in Harris County has shocked the community and raised concerns about mental health, family violence, and how quickly arguments can turn deadly. A life was lost, and now a young man faces a possible life sentence or worse.
