A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer is facing a criminal charge after allegedly threatening her neighbor during a heated argument over mail. The officer, 26-year-old Jazmin Featherstone, is accused of using her position as a cop to intimidate the woman, according to court records and police statements.
What Happened?
The incident occurred around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, when officers responded to a call about an “assault with a deadly weapon (no injury)” on Pinebrook Drive in Charlotte, North Carolina.
According to reports, Featherstone, who was off duty at the time, confronted her neighbor, accusing her of stealing mail. Things quickly escalated, and Featherstone allegedly told the woman she would “f— her up” and threatened to expose personal information about her “because she is the police.”
Threats and Firearm Involved, Say Officials
Police say a family member of Featherstone’s may have even pointed a gun at the victim during the incident. It is unclear if the family member who allegedly brandished the weapon was Featherstone’s mother, who was also reportedly present.
The victim told police the threats were completely unprovoked, claiming Featherstone was acting on her mother’s encouragement. According to the affidavit, the issue started over a mailbox post the victim had tried to put up near the edge of the property.
“I attempted to erect a mailbox post on the right of way,” the victim wrote in the statement. She said this caused Featherstone and her mother to accuse her of trespassing and stealing mail, which she denied.
Allegations of Misuse of Authority
The victim also told officers that Featherstone threatened to take her to court and seemed to believe her status as a police officer gave her power to intimidate others. She wrote that Featherstone said she would use her police role to reveal private things about the victim.
The court documents make it clear that the neighbor believed Featherstone’s actions were not only threatening but also an abuse of her position as a law enforcement officer.
Police Department Responds
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) has acknowledged the charge and confirmed that Featherstone has been accused of communicating threats, a misdemeanor.
CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings issued a public statement saying:
“The criminal charge filed against Officer Featherstone is concerning. Our department holds all officers to the highest standards of conduct, on and off duty. We will not tolerate actions that compromise public trust or the integrity of this agency.”
The department said officers are subject to the same laws they are sworn to enforce, and they will remain committed to accountability and transparency.
This incident has raised concerns about off-duty conduct and abuse of authority. Officer Jazmin Featherstone now faces legal consequences for allegedly threatening and harassing her neighbor, all over what appears to be a misunderstanding involving mail and property boundaries.
The investigation is ongoing, and Featherstone is expected to appear in court soon. CMPD has promised to hold her accountable if she is found guilty.
