Jason Momoa Shares Proud Moment of Casting His Father in Chief of War

Actor Jason Momoa recently opened up about a very personal moment in his latest project, Chief of War, a historical drama on Apple TV+. The Aquaman star revealed that his father, Joseph Momoa, appears in the series in a small but meaningful role.

A Special Cameo by Jason’s Dad

In an interview with NBC News on the Today show (aired July 31), Jason Momoa, 45, proudly said, “Pops is in it, yeah,” referring to his father’s role. He plays a man blowing a conch shell in a traditional Hawaiian scene.

Jason explained that this wasn’t just a made-up moment for the show. His father has always done this during special occasions. “Any special gathering whatsoever, my dad was always doing that,” he said.

Watching his dad in full costume for the role was very emotional. “To see him all in the wardrobe was a pretty beautiful moment,” Jason added.

A Project Close to the Heart

Chief of War is not just another TV show for Jason. It’s a personal dream and a tribute to his Hawaiian roots. Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, Jason said, “This is everything I’ve ever wanted to do — to do something for my culture and my heritage.”

The series tells the story of how the Hawaiian Islands were unified in the late 1700s, during the time of colonization. Jason co-created and executive-produced the nine-episode series, which is based on true events from Hawaiian history.

A Dream Come True

At the show’s premiere on July 30 in Hawaii, Jason spoke to PEOPLE and said, “I feel like this whole thing has chosen me in a way, like this is my destiny.” The event was held just two miles from the beach where Jason used to spend summers with his father.

He also talked about how meaningful it was to play the role of his ancestors. “To play my ancestors is such a responsibility. It’s scary and exciting,” he said. His children, Lola (18) and Nakoa-Wolf (16), were also present at the premiere, making the moment even more special.

His Father’s Ongoing Role in His Life

Jason’s father, Joseph Momoa, still plays a big role in his life. He’s a coach at an outrigger canoe club, where Jason learned how to surf as a child.

Jason shared an emotional moment that happened recently — ancient carvings in the sand (petroglyphs) were revealed right in the area where he grew up. “It’s kind of insane. I’ve never experienced that before,” he said.

A Special Moment With His Mother Too

Jason’s mother, Coni Momoa, is from Norwalk, Iowa. She has also had her moment in the spotlight with her son. Before St. Patrick’s Day 2024, the two appeared in a Guinness beer commercial together.

“She’s the one that introduced Guinness to me,” Jason said. Though she was nervous on set, Jason said she did a great job and found it cute to see her worry about her lines.

When and Where to Watch Chief of War

Chief of War premieres on Apple TV+ with its first two episodes on August 1. New episodes will be released every Friday.

Jason Momoa’s new series Chief of War is not just another acting project — it’s a deeply personal journey that honours his culture, family, and roots. Featuring his own father in a traditional Hawaiian role added a touching and meaningful layer to the story.

Whether it’s his dad blowing the conch shell or his mom nervously filming a commercial, Jason’s deep connection with his family shines through. For him, this project is more than entertainment — it’s a proud tribute to the people and places that shaped who he is.
