A Georgia woman has been indicted on felony murder charges after the neglect of her elderly, disabled mother led to the woman’s death.
Tyrossale Peak, 54, is accused of leaving her 82-year-old mother, Lillie Sapp, in a condition so severe that she was found stuck to her mattress due to untreated bedsores.
The Incident and Indictment
Tyrossale Peak was arraigned in Richmond County on charges of felony murder and neglect to a disabled adult after a grand jury issued an indictment earlier this month. The charges stem from the death of her mother, Lillie Sapp, who was found in December 2024 during a welfare check.
Peak had initially been arrested for neglect after deputies responded to a tip and discovered Sapp in a severely neglected state at her home on Rollingwood Drive in Augusta. Sapp’s body was found stuck to her bed, covered in feces, and surrounded by roaches.
She was incoherent and appeared to be in critical condition, which prompted emergency workers and firefighters to assist in removing her from the bed.
Mother’s Condition and Death
Sapp was transported to Wellstar MCG Health, where she was initially listed as stable. However, she passed away three weeks later due to complications from untreated bedsores and severe infections caused by poor living conditions.
Authorities revealed that Sapp’s condition was worsened by improper bedding and a lack of care, including not receiving necessary medical treatment and living in unhygienic conditions.
Peak allegedly deprived her mother of proper care, health services, and shelter, which ultimately contributed to Sapp’s death. The indictment claims Sapp’s wounds led to deadly infections in her lungs and bones.
Lack of Medical Care
Authorities discovered that Sapp had been removed from hospice care in June 2024, and there were no clear reasons for her transfer to Peak’s home. In interviews with police and EMS, Peak stated that her mother had “lost a bit of weight but she was fine,” and that she provided her with daily Ensure drinks.
However, when EMS visited the home, they found the kitchen infested with roaches and dirty dishes, further suggesting neglect.
Peak reportedly discontinued her mother’s hospice care and failed to provide adequate nutrition, fluids, and medical treatment, despite knowing her mother’s vulnerable condition.
Tyrossale Peak now faces serious charges for her role in her mother’s tragic death. This case highlights the dangers of elder neglect and the responsibility caregivers have to ensure the safety and well-being of vulnerable family members.
