Miami, FL — A 69-year-old Florida man is facing second-degree murder charges after allegedly killing his wife’s lover in a shooting at a flea market parking lot on July 12.
The suspect, Omar Rene Aguila, reportedly shot the victim after a confrontation at the Northside Shopping Center in Miami, where surveillance footage is said to have captured the entire incident.
The Affair and Confrontation
Aguila’s wife and the victim had been in a romantic affair since 2019, which Aguila learned of in April 2024. Despite urging his wife to end the affair, the victim showed up at the couple’s home just two days before the shooting, leading to a confrontation between Aguila and the victim.
On the day of the shooting, Aguila was at the flea market with his wife and son. The victim, according to the arrest affidavit, was delivering food to a friend when he encountered Aguila’s wife and tried to speak with her. Shortly after, Aguila reportedly approached the victim’s car, and the two began to argue.
The Fatal Shooting
In a swift turn of events, Aguila allegedly pulled out a gun and shot the victim several times. Paramedics rushed the victim to the hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The victim’s name has not been publicly released.
Self-Defense Claim
Following the shooting, Aguila initially claimed self-defense, stating that the victim had a gun in his car. However, after an investigation, detectives determined the victim was not armed at the time of the incident. Aguila, a convicted felon, is legally prohibited from possessing a firearm.
In addition to second-degree murder, he is facing charges for felon in possession of a firearm.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
Aguila was arrested on Thursday and is currently being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center without bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
