A disturbing incident at a Subway sandwich shop in Jacksonville, Florida, has led to the arrest of a store manager who allegedly locked a 10-year-old girl in a back room and insulted her parents. The accused, 33-year-old James Anthony Morris Jr., has been released on bail but is facing serious charges.
What Happened at the Subway Restaurant?
According to police, the incident occurred when the young girl accidentally walked across a freshly mopped area in the restaurant. Her mother told her to apologise to Morris, who was cleaning the floor at the time.
Instead of simply accepting the apology, Morris allegedly grabbed the girl by the hand and pulled her to the back of the shop. He then reportedly locked the door behind them, leaving the girl alone with him.
Mother’s Panic and Fight to Free Her Daughter
The girl’s mother initially thought Morris was joking. But when she tried to open the door, Morris allegedly pushed it shut, refusing to let the girl out. Realising the seriousness of the situation, the mother began to panic, shouting for help and struggling with Morris to open the door.
After fighting with him, she finally managed to open the door and rescue her daughter.
What the Girl Told Police
The girl later spoke to police and said Morris had gripped her hand tightly and pulled her into the back room. She said he began yelling at her, calling her parents “trash” and “terrible people.” She told officers she was extremely frightened and thought she was being kidnapped.
She also confirmed that Morris did not touch her in any sexual way, but said the experience left her scared. Police believe she was locked in the room for about two minutes before her mother was able to get her out.
Witness Confirms the Incident
Another employee at the Subway shop told police he heard the mother shouting and saw Morris pulling the girl away. He said Morris was “acting weird” and believed the girl might be in danger. This witness confirmed the mother’s version of events.
Morris Arrested, Then Released on Bail
James Morris was arrested by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and charged with false imprisonment of a child under the age of 13. When police tried to question him, Morris refused to speak and invoked his right to remain silent.
He was booked into jail and later released after posting a $5,000 bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for August 13.
