The New York Mets have acquired left-handed pitcher Gregory Soto from the Baltimore Orioles in a trade that brings the 30-year-old reliever to the Mets’ bullpen. In exchange, the Orioles will receive right-handed pitchers Wellington Aracena and Cameron Foster.
Soto’s Season and Career Stats
Soto, who boasts a 3.96 ERA and a 0-2 record in 45 appearances this season, brings valuable experience to the Mets’ bullpen. A two-time All-Star, Soto has accumulated a 4.24 ERA and a 13-31 record over 366 career appearances. In his first seven seasons in Major League Baseball, Soto has also recorded 56 saves.
Mets’ Bullpen and Starting Rotation
Soto will add depth to a Mets bullpen that currently ranks fifth in the National League with a solid 3.84 ERA. The Mets’ starting rotation, which owns the second-best ERA in the National League at 3.40, continues to impress this season.
The Mets are currently on a four-game winning streak, holding a half-game lead over the second-place Philadelphia Phillies in the National League East standings, with a 59-44 record.
Soto’s Free Agency Status
Soto is set to hit free agency in 2026, adding a bit of long-term flexibility to the Mets’ bullpen.
The Return for Baltimore
The Orioles will receive Wellington Aracena and Cameron Foster as part of the trade. Aracena, 20, posted a 2.38 ERA and 1-1 record in 17 appearances for the St. Lucie Mets, the Mets’ Single-A affiliate.
In 57 career minor league appearances, Aracena holds a 4.53 ERA. Foster, 26, posted a 2.97 ERA with a 5-2 record across 21 minor league appearances this season, including time in both Triple-A and Double-A. Foster has a 3.78 ERA in 66 total minor league appearances since 2023.
Orioles’ Struggles and Upcoming Games
The Orioles, sitting at 45-57, have struggled this season, ranking last in the American League East, 15.5 games behind the division-leading Toronto Blue Jays. Their starters own the worst ERA in the American League at 5.15, and the bullpen is also near the bottom with a 4.77 ERA.
The Orioles snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-3 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Thursday in Cleveland. They will now face the MLB-worst Colorado Rockies (26-76) at home on Friday at 7:05 p.m. EDT.
Meanwhile, the Mets will head to San Francisco to take on the Giants (54-49) on Friday at 10:15 p.m. EDT.
