PHOENIX (AP) — The Seattle Mariners have acquired Josh Naylor, the first baseman from the Arizona Diamondbacks, as they look to strengthen their lineup ahead of the July 31 trade deadline.
Naylor’s Impressive Season
The 28-year-old Naylor has had a strong season, hitting .292 with 11 home runs and 59 RBIs in his first year with the Diamondbacks. He was acquired by Arizona from the Cleveland Guardians during the offseason. In a memorable moment this season, Naylor hit a grand slam to secure a win against the Mariners in June.
Mariners’ Excitement
“We are thrilled to add Josh as we make a push for the postseason,” said Seattle general manager Justin Hollander in a statement. “Josh’s ability to hit for both average and power is unique, and we are excited to not face him anymore.”
D-backs Receive Two Pitchers
In exchange for Naylor, the Diamondbacks received left-handed pitcher Brandyn Garcia, who has made two appearances for the Mariners this season, and minor-league lefty Ashton Izzi.
Mariners’ Current Standings
The Mariners are currently 54-48, holding second place in the AL West division and the second wild-card position. With the trade deadline approaching, they are making moves to strengthen their playoff hopes.
D-backs’ Future Moves
The Diamondbacks, who are struggling with a 50-53 record, are expected to continue making trades ahead of next week’s deadline. Players like third baseman Eugenio Suarez, and pitchers Merrill Kelly and Zac Gallen, all with expiring contracts, could be traded.
Naylor’s Previous All-Star Season
Last season, Naylor had a standout year, being named an All-Star for the first time. He hit a career-high 31 home runs and recorded 108 RBIs for the Cleveland Guardians.
