Golden Bachelor alum Gerry Turner is weighing in after new Season 2 star Mel Owens sparked controversy with remarks about the age of women he’s willing to date.
Owens, 66, recently made headlines for saying he would “cut” any contestant over 60 — a comment that didn’t sit well with fans or fellow Bachelor Nation members.
Turner, 73, who captured hearts as the first-ever Golden Bachelor in 2023, offered some perspective, calling Owens’ remarks “unfortunate” and hopeful that the new lead will come to see things differently.
Gerry Turner Responds to Mel Owens’ Age Remarks
Speaking to Fox News Digital, Turner didn’t hold back in offering honest advice to Owens, who is set to lead the upcoming season premiering on April 22.
“I think it would be unfortunate, and I really think he will have a change of heart in this,” Turner said.
“I think he will see the grace and charm of women who are over 60 and the confidence they carry.”
Turner stressed the value of getting to know people beyond their age, sharing wisdom from his own Golden Bachelor journey.
“The age thing… ignore the number, deal with the person,” he said.
From One Golden Bachelor to Another
Turner also shared what made the women from his season so special. He called the 2023 contestants “all a gift” and praised their individuality and spirit.
“They each brought unique characteristics to the show,” he said.
“If Owens treats each and every one of them with courtesy and respect… and is a good listener… I think it’ll be fine.”
Turner’s message was clear: relationships, especially later in life, should be about connection, not just appearance or age preferences.
Mel Owens’ Controversial Podcast Comments
The backlash started after Owens appeared on the MGoBlue Podcast with Jon Jansen on June 4. The retired NFL linebacker and attorney openly shared his dating preferences — which many fans felt were dismissive.
“If they’re 60 or over, I’m cutting them,” he said, recalling a conversation with producers.
He added that producers reassured him the women would be “hot” and told him not to “worry about it.”
Owens also mentioned he’s looking for someone between the ages of 45 and 60, who is fit, energetic, and not dealing with “artificial hips and wigs.” His remarks sparked criticism for being both ageist and insensitive.
Owens’ Vision for Love — and the Network’s
Despite the controversy, ABC introduced Owens as the new Golden Bachelor with a hopeful tone. According to their press release, Owens — who was married for 25 years and has two sons — is looking for a love rooted in companionship and shared life goals.
The network said he hopes to find someone to enjoy “life’s everyday moments, make plans for the future, and grow stronger together.”
That vision, however, appears at odds with his earlier comments, which have some fans questioning whether he’s truly ready for a relationship based on deeper values.
While Mel Owens may have caused a stir with his comments about age and appearance, Gerry Turner’s response brings a thoughtful and optimistic view. Turner, who charmed America by finding love later in life, believes Owens will see the beauty in women over 60 once he starts his journey.
Whether Owens adjusts his perspective remains to be seen. But with Turner setting the standard for grace and respect, many fans hope Season 2 of The Golden Bachelor keeps its heart in the right place — focused on genuine connection over superficial preferences.
