Hurricane Harvey, Homecoming & Halloween: How Student Council Is Making It All Happen

James Buchanan High School’s Student Council is hitting the ground running this fall, powering through the season with school spirit, service, and creativity. Even though the school year has just begun, StuCo is already making a big impact — from disaster relief efforts to planning the biggest events of the semester.

Stepping Up for Hurricane Harvey

One of the first major initiatives this year was a Hurricane Harvey relief drive. The Student Council rallied the school community to donate essential items such as food, water, clothing, and supplies. Collection boxes were set up in the main office, and students responded with generosity.

“We ended up taking three carloads down to the drop-off station and helped organize it,” said Amber Brindle, 12, Student Council President.

In addition to collecting physical donations, the group also raised money for the Red Cross by hosting a hat day, allowing students to wear hats in exchange for a small donation. Every bit of effort counted toward helping those affected by the devastating storm.

Lights, Camera, Homecoming!

While supporting national causes, StuCo is also bringing the spotlight to Homecoming with this year’s glamorous theme: Hollywood. From spirit days to the big dance, students can expect a weekend filled with red carpet flair.

“Expect a red carpet entrance at the dance,” said Shaelyn Kaiser, 11, one of the dance committee chairs along with Victoria Hutchinson, 11, and Kristin Embly, 11.

Homecoming Week will feature themed spirit days leading up to the Friday pep rally, parade, and football game. Hutchinson teased some exciting entertainment: “We’ve planned some fun games and performances for it.” She also shared that she and Kaiser, along with Bergen Stevens, 11, will be emceeing the pep rally.

Falling into Fun with Halloween Festivities

With Homecoming planning well underway, Student Council is already looking ahead to Halloween. This fall favorite will once again feature the annual pumpkin-decorating contest and costume-judging, events that always draw big participation and plenty of school spirit.

Whether it’s rallying support for hurricane victims, rolling out the red carpet for Homecoming, or putting the “boo” in school spirit for Halloween, James Buchanan’s Student Council continues to go above and beyond. With just a month into the school year, it’s clear StuCo is committed to making 2017 a year to remember.
