A peaceful neighbourhood in New Jersey was rocked by a horrifying tragedy when a state trooper, driven by jealousy, killed his ex-girlfriend and her new partner before ending his own life. The case has been labelled a “targeted act” of violence, and it has left the families and communities of the victims in deep sorrow.
What Happened in Franklin Township, New Jersey?
On August 1, 2025, Dr. Lauren Semanchik, a 33-year-old veterinarian, and her new boyfriend, Tyler Webb, 29, were shot and killed outside Lauren’s home in Franklin Township, not far from New York City.
Their killer was Sgt. 1st Class Ricardo Santos, a New Jersey state trooper who had previously been in a relationship with Semanchik. Just hours after the double murder, Santos was found dead by suicide inside a white Mercedes SUV in a nearby park in Piscataway, just seven miles from the murder scene.
A Relationship That Turned Dangerous
Lauren had broken up with Santos in September 2024, nearly a year before the crime. But according to official reports, Santos did not take the breakup well. She had complained of his harassing and controlling behaviour, which reportedly continued even after they separated.
Semanchik had recently started dating Tyler Webb, a well-known mechanic and volunteer firefighter. Their relationship, though new, seemed to be going well—until that Friday evening when Santos decided to act violently.
How Police Solved the Case
Authorities revealed that Lauren had a dashcam in her car, which provided critical evidence. Footage from August 1 showed Santos’ white 2008 Mercedes SUV following her from her workplace to her home.
The camera then captured a person sneaking through the woods near her driveway, believed to be Santos. Moments later, Tyler Webb arrived at her home, unaware of the danger ahead.
At around 6:45 p.m., neighbours heard gunshots and screams. One neighbour told the media, “We clearly heard shots… and then we heard screams. She sounded terrified, like she was running.”
Despite a 911 call being placed, police did not arrive until the next day, when they found the couple dead outside the house.
The Final Moments of the Shooter
Authorities found Ricardo Santos the next day, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, with the weapon lying beside him in the vehicle. The evidence from the dashcam and other investigations confirmed that this was a double murder-suicide driven by jealousy.
Remembering the Victims: Lauren and Tyler
Lauren Semanchik was described as kind, selfless, and passionate about animals. Her love for animals began early in life with her pet cat Sneakers, who stayed by her side for over 20 years. She was a respected vet at Long Valley Animal Hospital.
Tyler Webb was remembered as a brave, multi-talented, and helpful man. He was involved in firefighting, Boy Scouts, car racing, mechanics, and more. He ran his own business, loved music, motorcycles, road trips, and his dog Luna. His life was full of adventure and connections.
Both families have received overwhelming community support, with GoFundMe campaigns started by co-workers to help them during this difficult time.
